“When Life Feels Dry: Trusting God and Caring for One Another”

Main Thought

Life has difficult seasons. Sometimes we may feel tired, lonely, worried, disappointed, or uncertain about the future. It may seem as though our prayers are not being answered and our strength is disappearing.

The small plant growing through dry ground reminds us that life can continue even in hard conditions. With God’s help, we can remain hopeful, grow in faith, and encourage others who are also struggling.

A difficult season does not mean that God has forgotten us.

🌵 1. Difficult Seasons Are Part of Life

Ecclesiastes 3:1

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

Life includes different seasons:

  • seasons of happiness
  • seasons of sadness
  • seasons of success
  • seasons of disappointment
  • seasons of strength
  • seasons of weakness
  • seasons of celebration
  • seasons of waiting

We should not feel ashamed when life becomes difficult. Even faithful people in the Bible experienced pain and discouragement.

David felt afraid.
Elijah felt exhausted.
Job experienced great loss.
Paul faced hardship and suffering.

Having difficulties does not mean that we have failed or that God has abandoned us. It means that we are living through a challenging season.

The important question is not only:

“Why is this happening to me?”

We can also ask:

“How can God help me grow through this?”

🌿 2. God Is With Us in Difficult Times

Isaiah 43:2

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.”

God does not promise that we will never face trouble. He promises that He will be with us when trouble comes.

When life feels dry, we may feel:

  • forgotten
  • afraid
  • discouraged
  • confused
  • lonely
  • physically or emotionally tired

But our feelings do not change God’s presence. Even when we cannot see what God is doing, He is still near.

A seed grows underground before we see anything above the surface. In the same way, God may be working in our lives even when we cannot yet see the results.

Remember:

Silence does not mean absence. Waiting does not mean rejection. Difficulty does not mean abandonment.

💧 3. God Gives Strength One Day at a Time

Matthew 6:34

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

When we face a difficult season, we may worry about everything at once:

  • What will happen tomorrow?
  • Will things ever improve?
  • How will I manage?
  • What if I fail?
  • What if the situation becomes worse?

These questions can make us feel overwhelmed. Jesus teaches us to trust God one day at a time.

We do not need strength for every future problem today. God gives us grace for today’s needs.

Instead of asking:

“How will I manage the next year?”

We can ask:

“What is the next right step I can take today?”

That step may be:

  • praying
  • resting
  • asking for help
  • making a phone call
  • attending church
  • taking medicine
  • apologising
  • completing one small task
  • encouraging someone else

Small steps still move us forward.

🌱 4. Growth Often Happens Slowly

Galatians 6:9

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

A plant does not become strong overnight. It needs:

  • water
  • sunlight
  • care
  • protection
  • time

Our spiritual and personal growth also takes time. We may not see immediate change, but every prayer, every act of kindness, and every decision to keep trusting God is helping us grow.

Growth may look like:

  • becoming more patient
  • learning to forgive
  • becoming stronger through prayer
  • asking for help instead of hiding
  • discovering compassion for others
  • becoming less controlled by fear
  • trusting God more deeply
  • learning from past experiences

Do not despise small progress.

A small plant is still alive.
A small prayer is still heard.
A small step of faith still matters.
A small act of kindness can make a great difference.

🤝 5. We Need One Another

Galatians 6:2

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.”

God does not expect us to face every difficulty alone. He gives us family, friends, church members, carers, leaders, and other caring people who can support us.

Sometimes helping someone does not require a perfect answer. We can help by:

  • listening without judging
  • sitting quietly with someone
  • offering practical assistance
  • preparing a meal
  • making a phone call
  • praying together
  • sending an encouraging message
  • helping with daily tasks
  • reminding someone that they are not alone

We should also be willing to receive help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is a wise and humble decision.

A dry plant needs water from outside itself. In the same way, we sometimes need strength and support from other people.

❤️ 6. Small Acts of Care Can Bring Hope

1 Thessalonians 5:11

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.”

When someone is going through a difficult season, we may not be able to remove the problem. However, we can make the journey less lonely.

A kind word may give courage.
A listening ear may bring comfort.
A prayer may restore hope.
A visit may remind someone that they matter.
A simple act of service may bring joy.

We should not underestimate small kindnesses.

Ask yourself:

  • Who may be feeling lonely?
  • Who needs encouragement?
  • Who may be carrying a hidden burden?
  • Is there someone I can contact this week?
  • What practical help can I offer?

Sometimes we become an answer to another person’s prayer.

☀️ 7. Keep Hope Alive

Romans 15:13

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.”

Christian hope is not pretending that everything is easy. Hope means trusting that God is still present and that our current situation is not the whole story.

Hope reminds us:

  • this difficult season will not last forever
  • God can bring good from painful experiences
  • we are not alone
  • help is available
  • God can renew our strength
  • tomorrow can be different from today

The plant in the picture is growing toward the light. We can also turn toward God through:

  • prayer
  • Scripture
  • worship
  • fellowship
  • gratitude
  • service
  • wise counsel

Even a small amount of hope can help us take the next step.

🌱 Illustration From the Picture

Show the group the picture and ask:

“What do you notice about the plant?”

Possible answers:

  • It is small.
  • The ground looks dry.
  • It is growing in an unexpected place.
  • It is reaching toward the light.
  • It appears fragile but alive.
  • It has not allowed the difficult ground to stop it from growing.

Then ask:

“What might the dry ground represent in our lives?”

Possible answers:

  • loneliness
  • sickness
  • grief
  • financial problems
  • family difficulties
  • disappointment
  • fear
  • waiting
  • failure
  • uncertainty

Then explain:

The plant cannot change the ground around it, but it continues to grow. In the same way, we may not be able to change every circumstance, but with God’s help, we can continue to grow in faith, love, patience, courage, and hope.

God can bring life even in places that seem dry.

🌟 Five Things to Remember

1. Difficult seasons do not last forever

“There is a time for everything.”
— Ecclesiastes 3:1

Your present situation is not the end of your story.

2. God is with you

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
— Hebrews 13:5

You may feel alone, but you are not forgotten.

3. Small steps are valuable

Do what you can today. Small progress is still progress.

4. You do not have to struggle alone

Ask for help and allow others to support you.

5. You can become a source of hope

Even while you are facing difficulties, your kindness may encourage someone else.

💬 Practical Ways to Grow Through Difficult Seasons

When life feels hard:

  1. Talk honestly with God.
  2. Read a short Bible passage each day.
  3. Focus on what you can do today.
  4. Ask a trusted person for help.
  5. Take care of your body through proper rest, food, and medical care.
  6. Write down three things for which you are thankful.
  7. Avoid isolating yourself completely.
  8. Accept that healing and growth can take time.
  9. Encourage someone else.
  10. Seek professional or pastoral support when needed.
  11. Celebrate small improvements.
  12. Keep trusting God, even when answers take time.

Faith does not mean that we never feel sad or afraid. Faith means that we bring our sadness and fear to God instead of carrying them alone.

🙏 Short Closing Prayer

Dear Lord,

Thank You for being with us through every season of life. When we feel tired, worried, lonely, or discouraged, remind us that You have not forgotten us.

Give us strength for today and faith for tomorrow. Help us to grow through difficult experiences rather than allowing them to destroy our hope. Teach us to ask for help when we need it and to care for people who are struggling.

Show us someone we can encourage, comfort, or serve this week. Help us to trust You even when we cannot see what You are doing.

May our lives bring hope and kindness to others, just as a small plant brings life to dry ground.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
